How do I shop for long-term care insurance?

Because the issues surrounding long-term care have such great implications, both emotional and financial, and the fact that most people are with their long term care insurance company for the rest of their life, it is important to consult with someone who will do all of the following:

  • Quote you with a number of different companies and/or policies and explain the differences
  • Tell you in detail why they think one policy is better than the other
  • They should be willing to meet with you, your financial adviser, and/or another trusted person for additional input.
  • And, they should be someone who will not rush the process.

Read the brochure and then the policy. Understand them.  The brochures for these policies have a lot of information and are a great starting point.

Don't buy long term care insurance from someone who does not show you or compare at least three or four different types of policies.  Don't let someone over simplify this in order to make a quick sale.

When a person knows that they are interested in long term care insurance, some want a policy right away and others take years to finally decide.  Take the time to learn, or have explained to you, the coverage and how it works. This way you will not be surprised about your policy's features if you ever need them.  In the future you will be grateful for your forethought and effort.
